Sign up for the LMS Orchestra!
Orchestra is open to all students who have an interest in learning the violin, viola, cello, or bass.
- Orchestra is a connection class that occurs during the school day (it will not interfere with athletics/clubs).
- 6th grade is the ONLY time to sign up for the orchestra program.
- Orchestra students form friendships that last a lifetime!
- You can choose your own instrument and there is no need to audition (no experience or musical background necessary).
- We will have instrument tryouts on Saturday April 18th from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm at Lanier MS. Come any time - no need to sign up! We will have professionals there to help you!
- We have some school instruments for rent and there are a TON of music stores in the area with GREAT rental programs
- You will learn how to read music and celebrate many styles of music throughout the year, including mariachi, holiday, jazz, classical, pop, and movie soundtracks.
- We have fun social events and field trips - birthday celebrations, Sugar Hill Parade, Ice Skating, Main Event, Six Flags, Dollywood, the Atlanta Symphony, and more!
- We perform two formal concerts a year and there are a LOT of smaller performance opportunities at school and in the community/state.

Instructions for Accepting Carnegie Credit

Please reference the content below in order to accept and/or decline Carnegie Credit for your 8th grader's applicable coursework dates for the 21-22 school year will be provided at a later date.
Using the Parent Portal and or ParentVue is the preferred method for submitting your choice.
Students in 8th grade may earn one Carnegie unit for passing the following approved courses if the course is taught by a teacher who is certified.
6 -12 in his/her specific content area:
- Accelerated Algebra I
- Algebra I
- Physical Science (HS Course)
- Introduction to Digital Technology
- Introduction to Business and Technology
- Spanish I
A student's parent/guardian is required to sign the Carnegie Unit Credit Decision Form at the end of the school year indicating either the credit for the course(s) taken will be for middle school credit or as a Carnegie Unit towards high school graduation; this year, the form will be completed electronically through the Parent Portal by following the videos and document below.
Students may not earn 1/2 Carnegie credit for courses. Courses that earn a high school Carnegie credit in middle school will not be used in the grade point average (GPA) calculation for high school, nor will be used in GPA calculations for the HOPE scholarship according to current Georgia Student Finance Commission rules for HOPE.
Both semester grades (not the yearly average) will be used to determine credit earned. If the student successfully passes both semesters, then a 'P' will be placed on the transcript and not a grade. A 'P' will equal 1.0 unit of Carnegie Credit earned.
If necessary, translated forms can be completed for each eligible class and may be submitted to the 8th Grade Office before the deadline that will be communicated at a later date.

What is Dual Enrollment?
The purpose of the Dual Enrollment program is to promote and increase access to postsecondary educational opportunities for Georgia high school students while increasing high school graduation rates, preparing a skilled workforce, and decreasing the time and cost of postsecondary credential completion.

semester hours or 45 quarter hours of
attempted college credit
Who is eligible to participate in the Dual
Enrollment funding Program?
- 9th Graders: 9th graders are not eligible to participate in the Dual Enrollment funding Program.
- 10th Graders: Eligible students may enroll in any approved Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) courses listed on the Course Directory at a participating TCSG institution.
- 10th Graders with a minimum SAT score of 1200 or minimum ACT composite score of 26 in a single national test administration, may enroll in any approved courses listed on the Course Directory at a TCSG, USG or private eligible participating postsecondary institution.
- 11th & 12th Graders: Eligible students may take any approved Dual Enrollment courses listed on the Course Directory, at an eligible participating postsecondary institution (USG, TCSG or private).
